What Do the Children Say?

"I would like to be a tennis player because it improves my concentration, because I would like to travel the world and because it is fun. I would like to improve my serve. My favorite tennis player is Pete Sampras."

The tennis programme of the Anguilla Tennis Academy is now attracting more than forty students between the ages of six and sixteen. Each participant attends three times a week and coach Rick Landry says he is already seeing a great deal of progress and finding a lot of talent.

The lessons take place in three age groups from Monday to Thursday and on Saturday mornings. The children taking part are very excited about their tennis and keen to improve. Within the next month, six of the top players will be traveling to St Maarten with Landry for a challenge match against some young St Maarten players.

Coach Landry is a member of the USPTA and brings a high level of knowledge and experience as a tennis professional to the programme. He is assisted by Marvin Hazel. The ATA sees tennis as a rapidly growing interest and revenue source in our region. Founder of the ATA, Mitchelle Lake says, "We hope that this programme will provide the children of Anguilla with a strong work ethic, educational opportunities and leadership training through the sport of tennis."

Landry says, "The children are very hungry for tennis and are having a great time. We even had Bernice Brooks come to class and participate with her arm in a cast. All the children have advanced their skills over the first session. Its not all hard work all the time. The children enjoy playing games such as eliminator, jail and olympics. Again, I would like to extend my thanks to the ATA and the Government of Anguilla for giving me the opportunity to work with the people of Anguilla and enjoy their beautiful island."
