There will be two age groups, the 6-10 year group and the 11-18 group, for boys and girls. The top two winners will play in the final, which will take place at Malliouhana tennis courts on Friday August 4, following which trophies will be presented.
Six children from three age groups are to be chosen from these 26 players, to go to St Lucia to the 17th Annual Coca Cola International Junior Tennis Tournament next month. The Anguilla Tennis Academy has contributed US $1000.00 for accommodation and entry fees to the tournament. The team chosen will be accompanied by Camp Tournament Director, Damien Hughes.
The last week of the Tennis Camp proved to be an exciting one for the 150 children who took part. The Camp Director, Mitchelle Lake and Tournament Director, Damien Hughes organized the entire three weeks and during the last week several expert tennis coaches were on hand to give lots of extra help and to make the week an interesting one. James Schor of Wilson Caribbean Sales, Maria Lopez from Venezuela, who is ranked No 1 in her country, and two teaching pros from the USA, Leandro Gutierrez and Oscar Escribano. Also coaching were George Richards from St Maarten and Iston Benjamin, Anguilla’s own young coach who won the Tennis Camp trophy for two years and is now a tennis assistant at Malliouhana Hotel. Each child who participated received a certificate that was designed and made by Chris and Jo-Anne Mason. Wilson presented lots of gifts for the children including key chains, hats, grips, string savers and visors.
At the closing ceremony several awards were presented to people who had given five years of dedicated service to the Tennis Academy programme. Heading the list were Mitchelle Lake and Damien Hughes. Others who were presented with awards were Bob Green, Lee and Suzanne Bertman, Millie Hodge, Lowell Hodge and Brenda Carty. After the presentations there was an exhibition match featuring Johan Kriek, visiting professional tennis player, with three of the coaches.
