What Do the Children Say?

"I would like to be a tennis player because it improves my concentration, because I would like to travel the world and because it is fun. I would like to improve my serve. My favorite tennis player is Pete Sampras."

ANGUILLA-For the fourth year Mitchelle Lake is organizing a Tennis Academy for the young people of the island. This year's event gets underway on Monday July 12 and continues for three weeks. It is open to children from six to seventeen years and is a great opportunity for those wishing to learn the game or to improve their game.

Mitch Lake (Camp Director) and Damien Hughes (Tournament Directory)

Mitch Lake (LINK) is the Academy Director who has just graduated from Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, North Carolina. Before returning to Anguilla he secured sponsorship from many individuals and companies in the USA for the tennis camp. He raised over US $5,000.00 from international businesses and has secured sponsorship from Wilson Sporting Goods and also Carson Products, which manufacture hair products. For the fourth year the main sponsor is Black Entertainment Television, (BET) through its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Robert Johnson.

Several local businesses are also expected to be assisting with sponsorship.

Mitch Lake will be assisted by Sean Romney and Damien Brooks, while Damien Hughes is the Tournament Director. Four coaches from Gardner-Webb University are expected to assist during the week July 19- 23 and they will be accommodated courtesy Carimar Beach Club. American Airlines, through local Manager, Millie Hodge have been most cooperative in assisting with tickets for these coaches as well as the Caribbean Sales Representative for Wilson, James Schor and the head coach from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Willie Shaw.

Wilson Sporting Goods has supplied balls, rackets, shoes, string, grips, bags and hats valued at over US $1,000.00.

The tennis camp is a great opportunity for the children of Anguilla and Mitch Lake told the Daily Herald that he is hoping for the same high level of participation and enthusiasm as in previous years.
